People now rely on email to be instantaneous (right or wrong). This type of system just has too many problems to work correctly.

For instance if all email senders were listed and searchable, you could look for bank records etc, then add them manually. I think this is extremely viable, but as you noted there are some initial problems that would need to be worked out.
