You're discussing DNS based solutions to spam (as in, if MX != PTR then bin
it) ... yet nobody (in the last 3 months...) from what I can recall has even
mentioned SPF once...

what? SPF is a "DNS-based solution"

and it's actually a fairly powerful way of blocking
spam... or will be!

Not at all clear whether SPF if method of blacklisting or whitelisting.

No SPF records? cannot reject, because only a tiny %age of domains have SPF records.

msg complies with SPF record? yes, but cannot accept because spammers use SPF and some legit servers set up extremely generous SPF records and/or "all"

msg doesn't comply with SPF record? no, but cannot reject because the msg maybe forwarded, etc, etc.

when the majority of people are running SPF, , you'll see a shift where people
change from allowing mail from hosts WITHOUT spf records, to blocking mail
from hosts without SPF records... as it stands now, if your sending from a
hacked/spam server and it's not listed in a domains SPF record.. It's
rejected.

This is something _VERY_ simple to setup... and certainly a 'way forward'...

Then why, at this fairly advanced stage of SPF availability, have only tiny %age of domains set up SPF reocrds?

Why at this extremely advanced stage of PTR availability, 20 years!, have not ALL legit business mailserver setup up any PTR record?
