We had this issue under 8.0x, but it seems like the upgrades to 8.1x fixed most of those issues. While having the issues we wrote a windows based service that keeps track of the spool based on size or growth percentage. If any of your alert criteria is exceeded you can configure the service to alert/or run an external script to correct the issue.
