I know the format for peering was changed from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to userid@<original_domain> but not sure when. It might have been a v8.1x modification as you can Peer virtual hosts as well

Okay,  you're  going  to  have  to  go  one better; there must be some
logging  options  turned off. Show me a transcript of a Telnet session
from the IMail server to the Exchange box. Use the initial sender, but
use  <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>  as  the recipient,
viz.

  <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

That's the format used by peering.
