Probably because client is trying to fetch only new mails it doesn't know yet (last_known_uid+1:max). Of course, client should know about new mails from UIDNEXT after SELECT or later with NOOP.. Well, there's also the mostly irrelevant race condition that if UID 10 was just expunged, 10:* would fetch the last undeleted mail.
