What would stop the delivery failure message on an attempt to send mail
to an unknown user?

The R* log is showing the attempt.
There is no message returned on the 550.

Do you mean you get an entry in the R log with just the date and 550?
Maybe someone tried to send a message with a blank "rcpt to:".

Can you post the line from the log?

Is there a D log with anything in it about the same time?

klint.
