So mail goes to the external filter first then to your smtprcv?  The
external filter is the one that gets the 550 message - so what does it
do with it?

As far as you email client goes, it will get a successfull delivery of
the email to the external filter.  It's then up to the filter to decide
what to do with the 550 when it tries to deliver it.

(helo wants a machine name not an email address)

looks like what's in rfc821 

            S: MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
            R: 250 OK

            S: RCPT TO:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
            R: 550 No such user here
