Have we already got some blueprints for a possible package management system or is this discussion in a different thread? If the discussion/specification is still open then I would suggest someone look into how FreeBSD (and later Gentoo) solved the problem. I found that kind of customizability quite useful for production systems. There is something to be learned there.
useful yes, but it's tedious to maintain a production system in the long term if you don't do a full rebuild/update each time. I'm a gentoo fan too, and I've been using it as my desktop system for a couple of years now, but it's not something I would use on production systems. On the other hand, systems like apt to have their merit if you are just
interested having some binaries slapped on your drive fast so you can play with minimum of fuss.
You can do almost everything with Debian system with apt-get source and build deps when you need that kind of flexibility. It's just that it's not the default way. A system with source management like portage and binary packages like in apt
would be most satisfactory :)
Can you tell me the difference between that and apt itself? --
