I've used OpenFiler and have found Conary to be great. Never any problems with it... plus I enjoyed watching the console output as it updated things. ;) But I don't know much about how it works, and how it fits into the whole-OS picture. Given that Solaris today is a big bunch of compiled files that are updated with old school patches, the door is open for just about any update system to be implemented. Third party software packages aside here, I'm just thinking about what would map well onto the monolith that is Solaris. Ubuntu is the obvious leader in the free desktop OS world, and Ubuntu uses APT. So that's the obvious first choice for project Indiana to look at. Would rPath Conary be a better choice for Solaris than APT?
