Kang Hery, RMAN adalah backup/recovery tool yg bersifat server-based. Artinya, process backup/recovery & hasil backup dilakukan dan disimpan di target database.
Catalog database dipakai utk menyimpan informasi mengenai target database (metadata) & informasi mengenai backup/recovery yg pernah dilakukan. Catalog database dipakai sbg suplemen(?) dari target database controlfile. Selain itu juga bisa dipakai utk menyimpan informasi backup dengan retention yg cukup lama (baca:forever. Kalau menggunakan controlfile, default-nya hanya 7 hari).
