It's not impossible with 3.3, but it's certainly extremely difficult.
People have done it.
Take a look at AFS backup in 3.4beta. It has several new features that
make it considerably easier to automate. I just did it here.
If you aren't ready to upgrade your whole cell, you can upgrade just your
backup system and leave the rest at 3.3a. To do this you need to replace
the following binaries: buserver on the database servers, butc on the
tape machines, and backup on the clients that will be issuing backup
commands.
