I don't think applications will need to know about AFS.  It is more that some
applications need to be used carefully.  Not entering old AFS volumes
unnecessarily would also make the application processes more efficient.
For example, a much faster backup process will result.

It would probably be an expensive decision to not deal with this situation. :)
