Russ,

we tried upgrade our three DB servers (IBM RS/6000 F50 SMP running AIX
4.3.2) from 3.4a to 3.5 approx. two months ago and ran into severe problems
because we didn't do it in *one* step (i.e. we had mixed AFS levels on
them). However, the recommendation from Transarc not to do this wasn't out
yet in June ... :-/

We already had a few file servers successfully migrated to 3.5 and thus we
started with the DB servers. The first machine (non sync-site) went fine,
but after upgrading the second machine (the sync-site), the vlserver ports
of all three DB servers got totally jammed, so no communication between
them to synchronize their DBs was possible. Of course we contacted
Transarc, what we perhaps should have done *before* trying to upgrade the
servers, but I've never heard of any restriction in mixing 3.4a and 3.5
level on the DB servers. Now, hindeed, there is one!

Back on 3.4a for the DB servers (and 3.5 for all of the file servers),
everything is ok. Anyway, we want to have the DB servers also running 3.5,
but due to the workload of our customers, we have to wait until
September/October for our next try ...

Bottom line: If I were you, I would really take care and follow the
recommendation from Transarc (with respect to our bad experience)!

Good luck & regards!
Markus

Some time back, I asked this list whether it was safe to mix 3.4 and 3.5
VLDB servers in the same cell, to make upgrading easier. Thank you,
everyone who responded with your experiences.

Several people reported that they had successfully done this with 3.4 and
3.5 servers (my understanding is that it's not possible between 3.3 and
3.4 due to major format changes) and haven't seen any problems. Transarc,
however, strongly recommends that one *not* attempt to do this, and that
in fact one run the same build level on all of the servers, not just the
same major revision.

We're currently running different build levels on different servers and
haven't seen any problems, but given the word from Transarc, I think we'll
plan to upgrade all of the VLDB servers to 3.5 simultaneously.
