One thing that occurred to me is that perhaps you have too many db
servers.  Ubik's write performance drops off pretty fast as you add db
servers, so you might be seeing a bottleneck caused by the database
updates that the backup system does.  Certainly if you have more than
three db servers this would be a strong candidate for the problem.
