We've encountered a few problems with popular utilities and languages
interacting with AFS. When possible, we tried to contact the vendor
ourselves but generally get nowhere. As a user community we could
collect known problems and centralize this in some data base under AFS.
I have been working with the folks at Transarc with the hope that they
would appoint a "CZAR" who could represent our interests to the various
vendors. What this person could do is to keep track of the reported problems,
the number of reported complaints, report them to the appropriate
vendor, and to maintain a current status of the problems.
Are there others out there who would like to see this happen? Do you
know any problems that you think others should know about or
that you would like reported? If so, then please reply so that Transarc
can get a feel of the level of interest. Here is a brief discription
of the problems we encountered over the past several months:
RSH : Under HPUX 9.01 this doesn't work.
CVS : There is a problem with the way CVS performs its locking when
the files are within AFS. When your current PTS id != your uid,
the locks are not deleted. The stat() system call returns
the PTS id of the owner. If that id != your uid, CVS assumes
you did not lock it, and leaves the lock files alone. The
next time you try to use it, it complains that someone has
the repository locked.
C++ : Things fail when the ptlink tries to move the resulting object
into the "repository" directory, likely caused by ptlink using
link and unlink. This fails in afs if the target is not in the
same directory as the source.
