> Subject: Any interest in an AFS interoperability problem solving CZAR?

This certainly seems reasonable. When I asked Liz Hines about this in June,
I thought there was some interest. However, when I contacted her in July
when we had some time to pursue the C++ problem with the vendors, I was
disappointed with the response from Transarc. I am currently handling it
on my own. I would like this to change.

There are a few categories I think in which we can list problems:

        OS vendor software
        Third-party applications software
        Transarc-modified software (e.g., UNIX utilities)
        Public domain software

Starting from the end, public domain software will be fixed by the user
community and hopefully the distributor will incorporate the AFS-related
fixes into the general distribution.

Transarc-modified software should be fixed by Transarc to behave as closely
as possible to version provided by the original software distributor. This
means that the modified SunOS rsh will behave like SunOS rsh and the modified
HPUX rsh will be have like the HPUX rsh. Currently, this is not the case.

Third-party applications software vendors are a mixed breed. Some will bend
over backwards to solve any problem you have while others will ask you 50
questions over a two weeks period only to tell you that your problem will be
a low priority as they are too busy to address "customer enhancements".

OS vendor software problems are probably the most difficult to get corrected.
In general, the answer is "we don't support AFS".

The latter group of third-party vendors and the OS vendors are where we need
the most help. A central authority would help greatly in maintaining a
database of problems and their victims and serve as our lobbying group to
focus pressure on reluctant vendors. This database could also be used to track
problems with Transarc-modified software as well as with public domain software.

It seems natural that Transarc should be that central authority since it is
in their best interest to make the introduction of AFS into an environment as
trouble-free as possible.

We have experienced problems with cvs, rsh, rlogin, and C++. All but cvs
were reported to Transarc. There are probably more that I am not aware of.
