Hello Per, I cannot answer this question. Somebody who does not want to have <user>.dav files, has to investigate this and propose a patch. So far you seem the be the only one, who does not want to have <user>.dav files.
Next step would be to propose patch for including upstream. In whatever way this patch is made, it is unpredictable, if it will be included. So you keep the patch for yourself, and apply it, when you do again a version jump.
