iMS is just as fast as any server for sending mail (it can optimally deliver
over 7 million email messages). Receiving mail is a little bit different.
Whereas other mail servers have hard-coded message receipt and storage
functions iMS relies on ColdFusion to make many decisions. Therefore, there
is some associated lag time where a ColdFusion template is being run and/or
an SQL DB is being queried. To optimally run the SMTP server you would
disable the HELO and MAIL templates and use the RCPT and DATA template
alone. So, given this additional overhead, I would estimate that the RCPT
and DATA templates would usually add around one to five seconds of
additional processing time over a hard-coded solution.
If anyone else here has a comment please feel free to post it here.

Howie
