Hi All,
Chipping in on this a bit late, its been a busy Easter weekend and today's
still a public holiday here in Oz, ANZAC Day, in fact.
We run iMS as our prime mail server in a hosting company environment and we
do offer custom built mail facilites to clients. We also are running a
hybrid List server thing while we try and get time to finish a proper
iMS-based List server.
The iMS server gets dumps of 300 mails from the List server, via SMTP, and
gets rid of the lot inside about 2 minutes, apart from those that can't get
out due to all the usual reasons (Yahoo are one of the worst places to post
to <g>). That is a lot better than Howie's benchmark but we do use the
ability to send one post to many users in one Domain. As these posts are
List posts they are to the same set of domains everytime and so nearly all
the MX lookups, etc., are cached, hence the fact that iMS seems to be
running at about 1-2 posts a second quite happily.
For incoming and POP mail we notice little delay except the initial opening
of the connection to the DB server. We use our main SQL database server for
the iMS database and you can't even see the load when a POP client collects
200 odd messages in one go when they first log in (isn't cf-talk wonderful
when you are in the wrong timezone <g>). Using performance monitor and
logging cf page hits we get about 30 mails a second inbound from the List
server, via a direct 100MHz network connection but unknown limits in the
post server on the List server.
Hope that helps.

Yours,
Ky
