The iMS part of the listserver code was pretty easy. Howie gave me the
template used for this list, which was set up as a "Processor" account (so
it got processed by its own template). Since I have lots of lists, I
generalized it, and created 2 new templates, RCPT_LIST.CFM and
DATA_LIST.CFM. They are CFINCLUDED by RCPT and DATA, respectively.
Gratefully, I don't have to set up each list in the POP table.

RCPT_LIST checks to see if the recipient is any of the list names, or any of
the list processor accounts (listname-owner, listname-unsubscribe, etc.).

DATA_LIST actually sends out the mailings, so checks to see if the person
belongs to the list, has posting privledges, etc. The only problem I'm
having right now is wanting to insert a line at the bottom that says:

    archives: http://smokescreen.org/?#listname#
    Recipient: #email#

So many people have messages forwarded that they don't know what e-mail
address they're logged in as, and they moan and whine about wanting to be
taken off the list. They can't figure out how to see the X-ListMember
header. This is easy to do if it's a plain text file (like a system
message), but I haven't figured it out for messages with attachments
(including HTML messages, which are now very common).

The list management is proving to be more complex -- it's integrated tightly
with my user system, security, etc., I'd be happy to share the iMS template
files (RCPT_LIST and DATA_LIST) with you, and I can show you the management
system to see what parts of it you'd want. If you already have the email
addresses in some sort of database (NTList 4 supported this, but was too
difficult to use -- dymamically changing tables!), then integrating this
will be simple.

If you'd like, log into www.smokescreen.org , check out the archives and
lists I'm current using, and subscribe to test-list and/or smokescreen-talk.
I'd value your input, and if you decide to go with a similar configuration,
we should talk about sharing code.

Now, this brings up another question which has been haunting me, which I
thought was OT for this list but now I'm realizing isn't. If I were to
share with you my code for the list management, it's cluttered with lots of
other data related to the other services my members use. I'd like to
isolate that data, and make the listserv part generic, but having access to
the other data. Microsoft Passport does exactly this. LDAP might do this,
but I still haven't really figured out what LDAP is. My site has grown
sufficiently complex that I've split it into multiple sites, but they need
to share some of the database (e-mail address, verified, name, organization,
etc.) Now there are other people who need to access that same database for
that info. I could give it to them via ODBC, or XML, but both are complex
to set up and very specific to my setup (which could change!).

Any thoughts on this? It'd be worth considering a MS-Passport/LDAP type
option with iMSList if such a thing existed.

constantly at the moment to catch spammers, so I do agree it's nifty (can't
say I'm happy about it though :). There is a win32 program out there called
Tail97 (I think) which will "tail" a log file ala the UNIX tool by the same
name. This means it will keep watch on a text file you specify, and show
you any new lines that are added. Pretty much identical to the various Log
views in the Monitor proggie. But there's no way to watch individual
threads like the Monitor also does.

completely iMS at this point is that I don't have time to write a decent
list server using iMS to replace NTList. I only got a couple lists... but I
can't just drop 'em :)

of SMTP authentication because all my clients come in from outside IPs. I
might have to go with POP before SMTP for now. Ah well. But anyway, I'm
glad it's worked out well for you, that's encouraging!
