That seems to be quoted from RFC 1893, but I don't think that's really relevant, since most of the remote mail servers aren't going to be using those "enhanced" codes (note the dots between the digits), which are a supplement, not a replacement for, the normal SMTP codes like 451 and 552. In any case, I don't think iMS pays attention to those codes (nor should it) except to report them as part of the message, if they exist. It looks at the actual SMTP code, as described in described in RFC 821 and RFC 2821, not the message. Those codes do have the idea of temporary and permanent failures, though, so your point may still stand.


I'm not sure what you expect iMS to do differently, though. Even if an error is "temporary", the server isn't supposed to keep trying to deliver it forever, so it seems that iMS is following the spec.
