When the POST Server sends mail you will get notifications for any type that you enable:

Delivered
Temp Fail
Perm Fail

These are all directly related to the reponse from the other email server.  A delivered status means that the remote mail server accepted the mail for delivery but does not necessarily mean that the mail can be delivered to the ultimate destination.  For example, some email servers will accept all emails bound for a domain regardless of whether the mailbox is valid.  If the address is invaild then the mail server will return the email to the sender (a soft bounce).

If the remote server indicates that there is a transient failure (mailbox full, for example) then the email address will be listed in the Temp failed list.

If the remote server indicates a permanent failure (mailbox does not exist, for example) then the email address will be listed in the Perm failed list.

If you configure the SMTP Server (or the SMTP/B server) to accept bounced mails then you can process soft bounces at that point.  Bounced mail will typically be received within a half hour but, depending on the remote server, this could take several hours.

The POST Server will only retry mail sending to a recipient if the delivery attempt resulted in a transient failure.  The total number of attempts is dependent upon the max delivery time and delivery retry time.  Also - you can specify the maximum retries in the CFX_iMSMail tag parameters.   Also, once the maximum retries has been attempted, the recipient address (the one that had transient errors) will be marked as a permanent failure.

As for an RFC - there really is no RFC that specifies the rules for bouncing an email.  So, processing bounce messages can be a bit difficult.

Subject: [iMS] Retry Bounces question

Hello,

I have a question about how iMS retries bounces.

First, will it only retry soft bounces automatically?

Here is my assumption, please correct me if necessary:
When I send out a large number of messages, the first set of "completed" attempts will only be hard bounces and succesfully delivered messages. Then, for the next thirty minutes, that will continue to be the case. Soft bounce send attempts will only be finished after 3 attempts or when an attempt results in success or hard bounce.

Any insight would be appreciated. Also, is this sort of retry rule based on some RFC?

Thanks,
