Hi Paul

Wouldn't it be more appropriate that the individual have a updated 'Virus protection', rater than relaying on someone else to protect their computer by insuring their data is clean. After all virus could arrive in all types of transmissions 'not just by email with attachments or with out'.
I don't think you quite understood what Rohan was saying. A lot of viruses spoof emails (ie. create emails that look real) and insert in the sender field an address from the address book of the computer that's infected. That is, if I were infected, emails would start happening that would appear to be sent by people who are in my address book, even though those people *aren't* infected. So Rohan wasn't saying that Tom has caught a virus from a friend, but rather that if a friend of Tom's had a virus it might be using Tom's email address from his friend's address book to fill the sender field in the spoof emails it creates.
As an example, I've been getting emails which have, as the sender, my own email address and my ex-husband's name! Now he hasn't used that email address for some 5 years or so (and in fact when he did use it it always had both our names as sender, not just one of us), and he certainly doesn't own it now, which means it must be coming either from someone's (non-updated) address book or some archive or something on the web.
I've enjoyed sandbagging - sleeping, so I'll go back to doing so, all the best to the group.
You could stick around - we like having new people in the discussions :-)
