Hobbes’s only systematic discussion of God is in Elements of Law, Chapter 11, Articles 1–6. Here he gives what is known as the ‘first cause’ argument — there must be an eternal, uncaused cause, which set off the chain of contingent causes and effects we observe in the created world.
