Slak dead? That's ridiculous. v3.5 was released July '98 with kernel
version 2.0.34, X11 v3.3.2, egcs-1.03 (a better gcc) gcc-2.8.1, etc.
See http://www.cdrom.com/titles/os/slackwar.htm fomodetails. You can
download it from ftp.cdrom.com, and of course, it's also available on cd
from http://www.cheapbytes.com/ for $1.99.
I have Slakware 3.5 running on my Inspiron 3200, and it works wonderfully.
I installed from the bareapm.i and pcmcia.gz boot/rootdisk, and as I
recall, it had no problem recognizing my 3C562D/3C563D lan+modem card. And
I was especially pleased to see that redhat even put up a targzipped
version of the neomagic X server for us anti-rpm people!
And Brad, as far as problems installing the pcmcia-cs package, it helps if
you have the linux kernel source tree installed. Maybe you didn't install
the source, or maybe you didn't install it where you told the pcmcia-cs
install script you installed it?
Sorry for replying to two people at time...
