Actually, if you are just starting out into linux, Slackware is my
prefered installatoin. It is small enough (not as much crap to deal with)
that you don't have to worry about the overhead of Redhat. Also, it
allows you NOT to get into the NASTY RH habits. Yea...I know that RPMs
are absolutely the greatest ting under the sun, but it isn't the ONLY way
to do things. I think beginners should be forced to learn how to install
things without RPM...(make config, make dep, make clean, make install,
etc..:) you learn alot more on the Slackware System instead of the RH
sistem. However (putting on the fire retardent suit), i think RH is a
better distribution overall. There is lots more functionality in it (more
utilities, etc.). And it is alot more "professional" i think...just my
opinion. I would say Slackware is FAR from dead, but I do think that it
is consistantly farther behind than RedHat.
