If you check the back archives, there is NOT an XF86 server for the Rage 
chipset yet (Grumble, my brand new desktop came with the ATI rage AGP also 
and I'm haveing the same problems).  Your best (Read "ONLY") option is to 
get that Accelerated X server from XiG.  It does support the Rage chipset.
