There is undoubtedly a more sophisticated way but the lazt way I do it
is:
mkdir /etc/init.not
mv /etc/init.d/??? /init.not where ??? are the functions you don't
want on at boot up every time
Then when you are connected to the LAN on boot, just do:
/etc/init.not/??? in the proper sequence to bring up the functions you
want.

With all the APM options enabled in freshly complied 2.0.35 kernel for
my Inspiron 3000, it does not PowerOff on Linux Shutdown
so I just let it boot Win95 and then Shutdown from there
