I, too, have an I7K with the 15" display and 8MB ATI Rage Pro LT.

Initially, I had to build Steve's "x dongle" to get XFree86 working. The
dongle worked, as advertised, but it was a but of a pain. However, I just
(a few days ago) downloaded the new libc6 XF86_Mach64 binary and
everything works great. Here's my config:

        RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36)
XFree86-3.3.2.3-25.i386.rpm (and related rpms)
libc-5.3.12-27.i386.rpm
XF86_Mach64_patched.libc5.tar.gz (from Steve's page)

Relevant Stuff from XF86Config file:

        Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "My Monitor"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    ModelName "Unknown"
    HorizSync 31.5-65
    VertRefresh 50-85
    # 1024x768 @ 70.8Hz
    Modeline "1024x768" 75.00 1024 1052 1212 1284 768 772 780 825 \
           -hsync -vsync
EndSection

Hope it helps!

Scott

I am new to this mailing list so I apologise in advance if this
question has already been asked to death but I am desparate to get
Linux up and running ...

I have an Inspiron 7000 (15" display, 8MB ATi Rage Pro LT) and have
followed the instructions on Steve Hsieh's page for configuring
XFree86:

  http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/#xserver

When I execute 'startx' the screen flickers and rolls (like when the
vsync is out on a television). The XF86Config contains the following
'Monitor' section:

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "My Monitor"
  VendorName "Unknown"
  ModelName "Unknown"
  HorizSync 31.5-65
  VertRefresh 50-85
  # 1024x768 @ 70.8Hz
  Modeline "1024x768" 75.00 1024 1052 1212 1284 768 772 780 825 \
                                                                  -hsync -vsync
EndSection

Here come the questions:

  What am I doing wrong?

Has anyone succeeded with different values?

What is the best way to tweak the values to zero in on the correct ones?

What is the difference between the libc5 and libc6 XF86_Mach64
binaries on Steve's page? Which one should I use?

Should I give up and buy Accelerated-X?
