If a train station is where the train stops, what is a work station?
jshriv> As to word processors, I personally don't use the god awful things (I use
jshriv> emacs and LaTeX). But, if you insist on a wordprocessor Star Office is
jshriv> suppose to be a pretty close rip off of Microsoft office, see earlier
jshriv> posting about Star Office. As to the CAD argument, I am not sure what
jshriv> part of the CAD world you are in but AutoCAD if far from the "ONLY"
jshriv> acceptable CAD package. Many of the high end CAD packages are available
jshriv> only on Unix, which is part of the reason AutoCAD is not fighting for that
jshriv> niche. Algor, Ansys, Microstation are a few from companies that are
jshriv> pretty large for not selling any products in the "real" world. Note,
jshriv> these companies don't support Linux either.
If you have ear worked in a architecutral env. you would know that the
autodesk .dwg format is the standard. you cannot work in the design world
w/o autocad knowlegde, most companies wont even look at you w/o 5 or so
years of acad experience. i know this as both my parents are architects,
and most of thier friends are also archteicts who either work for or own
large design/engineering companies, i see what they use. its acad.
jshriv> About the only "standards" I believe Microsoft has set is the Office
jshriv> Suite. Far and away most offices have standardized on this set of tools.
jshriv> Was this a good decision, not in my opinion, but everyone is bent on
jshriv> "compatibility" with Office.
i have serveral linux servrs. i have at least 3 im looking at now (incl.
the one that runs this list) that are strictly linux-only, however when
imn writing a paper for school i cant imagine using one of the linux WP's.
Works has a nice GUI (its a bit much but i can handle that) and the
spelling and grammer checking abilty far outweigh those of any linux WP
that i have seen.
