Did you modularize it?  Check to see that it's all loaded and stuff. Also,
if you booted to crapdows... err.. that other operating system, and booted
back to Linux without a poweroff, you might have not loaded the sound at
all(being on a different irq/port).  But didn't you just say you finally
got rid of windows, or 's that someone else?  Also, if you are running it
as a module, make sure you have the module directory in conf.modules.  
You may have something locking up the audio device.  This would be the
card itself having the inability to play more than one thing at a time.  
I know that I was using Enlightenment for a day or two and it was loading
a sound program that never unloaded!  It kind of erked me because while it
was loaded it had its claws on /dev/dsp.
