Hey hey hey...just out of curiosity..this is on the 3200? I've got a 3K
and am only running 2.0.33 kernel...there's a crystal option (CS3 I'm
thinking..may be 4 I don't know), but i've never gotten it compiled
correctly. Anyone out there got the settings for a default 3K or want to
tell me what vals go where?

Douglas Wagner

p.s. I've tried compiling .33 with that crystal option before and I can't
seem to make it work...i'd guess the first thing i'm going to hear is
upgrade the kernel, but i'm asking anyway..:)

Here's my advice--I don't know what the website said, but you need
to use the Crystal Sound option.. CS4??? somethingorother in the kernel.
Then you need to go to your fuzzzyyyyy wuzzy F2 when you boot.. bios! Go
to the bios and get all the values. By the way, WS is the one you're
interested in.. or CS if there's one of those. Annnnyway. Then you take
your information(make sure you have it set as opposed to auto. Take that
data, plug it into the kernel dealy, and recompile. This is with the
stock kernel sound, not OSS. Also be sure you have /dev/dsp enabled(don't
know if you can compile without it). Oh, by the way, CDs always play.
You can practically have the computer off with power to the soundcard and
the CD will still play. That is because the CD drive has a special audio
cable that goes directly to the soundcard and completely bypasses the
computer. That's also why playing CDs doesn't drain CPU. I personally
recommend mpg123 because of all the nifty signal handling and it only
pulls 6% or so of my cpu. Compare that to any windows player, probably
even beats out the 8bit mono crappy players.
I had the static problem too for a bit, and it was because the
second DMA was funny. Like, if you don't have that set right it will
probably do the same thing. My problem was that I was using the
soundblaster option and copying the info from the bios for the
soundblaster emulation. It was fine in some cases. For example, playing
quake sounded fine, but quake2 was static. Now it's all good. Like
something I read, soundblaster compatibility is not always 100% and the
kernel uses 100% compatiblility or it breaks. Sooooooooooooo..... That's
all.
