Hehe, i;m not sure if i'm out of bounds by saying this or not but "bad
idea". Last i'd heard 2.1.x kernels brake quite a bit of the Linux
operating programs (the OS it'self is fine, the programs that ship with it
arn't ready for 2.1.x kernels yet). Stupid question time, but you did try
a hard poweroff and power on? I'm going to assume that there's another OS
on that inspiron that you hit AFTER compiling your kernel. Or that you
droped down FROM the other os (one which supports that card) and compiled
the kernel. In any case, if you only have linux on there, i'm not sure
what the problem is. If you've got a second os on there and droped down
from it to do the compile, boot into the first os, shut it down and go into
linux, see if your sound works then. If on the other hand you booted
directly to the other os and then droped to linux and it doesn't work, try
a power off for about 10 to 15 seconds then go directly into linux and see
if it works.

Subject: RE: MP3 Static

I recompiled my kernel using the crystal sound options, and it worked
wonderfully. for one day. I was playing mp3 files with x11amp and they
sounded great. But when I went to use it the next day, it wouldn't work at
all. x11amp said that it couldn't open the sound device. I can't even cat
..au files to the /dev/audio. So I don't know what I was doing right the
day
before. But I just installed the source code for the 2.1.?? kernel (the
latest
one, I can't remember the last two numbers). I've read that some things
have
been changed in how sound is supported, so maybe this it will work this
time.
Wish me luck.

|Thanks, that sounds good. The website I was looking at
|(nts.ml.org/inspiron)
|said that you should have 6859 UART, MIDI interface support, and FM
|Synthesizer
|support as well as the SB options. Did you have these as well, or only
the
|crystal sound option, along with /dev/dsp support?
