First let me say that unless you write software or host web pages you are
unlikely to be happy about the switch to Linux. If you feel very
technically confident, like to be able to change OS source code, or need
Unix support than Linux can't be beat. HOWEVER, if you are basically
happy with your development environment it does NOT make sense to use
Linux. Exact replacements of Microsoft products are NEVER available as it
is part of Microsoft's competitive stratergy to modify the internals of
their programs OFTEN. Also, drivers for hardware are not available from
most manufacturers. This means that you must look around the internet to
find the appropriate drivers.

If you are just curious about Linux and have an I3k the install should be
relatively simple, buy the Redhat distribution (Best Buy, Global Office
Supply, and many book stores) install and play. If you are going to try
to get a lot of hardware working it will be a lot of work. If you want to
tinker then it can be a lot of fun but if you are trying to replace MS
products my advice would be skip it. There is an office suite knock off
StarOffice, but I would supsect that with each new release of office it
would be "off" for a couple of months.
