It's taken some time to wade through this discussion and the related
threads it spawned. Since it seems the actual proposal has been amended
to a project which will *investigate* a port of Conary to OpenSolaris, I
will provide a +1.

That done, I'll just add that I found much of the discussion
disappointing, especially some of the alarmist postings to
sysadmin-discuss, and the particularly negative assumptions about the
motivations behind IPS or some of us at Sun. We really are on the same
side, which is to make OpenSolaris the best OS there is. Please try to
remember that, even if we disagree about how to go about it.

My fear is that this project will contribute to a lesser result than we
might have were its participants' energies directed towards one of the
existing projects. I note that in the case of SVR4, the source has been
open for 18 months, yet only Peter Tribble has submitted any
contributions towards improving it (and they're much appreciated!). I
find that quite disheartening, and am somewhat mystified as to why the
widespread recognition that there's a need to improve things hasn't lead
to energy being put there.

Ultimately, while I've chosen to provide a vote in favor of this
proposal, it's only because philosophically I don't feel it's my job to
tell someone they can't pursue something in OpenSolaris. However, I
hope you and the others who might choose to work on this project will
give serious consideration to not going forward with it and putting your
energies into IPS or Caiman instead. We could use the help.

Dave
