Hi all,

There is no reason to revisit or deprecate RFC6302:

· The root technical issues as documented by intarea (RC6269) are still
valid. Those issues will be experienced by more and more in the future.

· RFC6302 records a valid technical recommendation for servers logging
IP addresses for abuse purposes.

I don't think that the IETF has to mandate or preclude (IP address) logging..
There are plenty cases where this is justified. Likewise, there are cases where
this is not motivated at all.

Corollary, the IETF has not to provide a recommendation about "acceptable"
duration for which logs, if recorded, have to be maintained. There are
country-specific laws/rules for those matters.

Cheers,
Med

Objet : Re: [Int-area] WG adoption call: Availability of Information in
Criminal Investigations Involving Large-Scale IP Address Sharing Technologies

Hello,

The call is now over and there's been a good discussion on the list. Even
though there is clearly no rough consensus to get the document adopted by the
WG, many interesting points have been made.

More than the details about what/where/when/how/for-how-long to log, the more
important question is whether IETF should say anything about this topic or not.

For this, we need to consider not only the technical details, but also the
intended audience and the potential implications that the document could have
outside the IETF.

There are three options, which could lead to different next steps:

  * Should IETF say anything at all about logging?

     *   If yes,

        * Are we ok with RFC 6302 in its current form?

           * If yes: Then we have nothing else to do
           * If no: Should we amend 6302?

     *   If no,

        *   Should we deprecate/make-historical 6302?

Although this is something that may need to be addressed beyond the IntArea WG,
any inputs people can provide here would be useful.

Best,

Juan Carlos & Wassim

Subject: [Int-area] WG adoption call: Availability of Information in Criminal
Investigations Involving Large-Scale IP Address Sharing Technologies

Dear all,

After some discussions on the v6ops and intarea mailing lists, the author of
draft-daveor-cgn-logging is requesting its adoption by the IntArea WG.

Hence, we would like to start a WG adoption call for
draft-daveor-cgn-logging-04
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-daveor-cgn-logging-04.

Please indicate your preferences/comments on the mailing list. The deadline is
May the 4th.

Best,

Juan Carlos & Wassim
