There are many games that disabled at least part of the aero system, and when desktop composition is disabled on the compatibility tab with those games aero is supposed to be fully off. Btw, that 2d article in toms hardware is rather interesting, as I already found the gma 950 performing better at 2d than many gpus on steroids like atis and nvidia. And let's not forget it was a bus width of 128 bits which is equivalent to many mid range gpus.
