Lol I actually know why this is so, GPU's have come such along way from the
days of 2D that running 2D games on newer cards will often cause lag and bad
fps even though these games could be played easily on computer 10-15 years
ago, the same applies for aero, it actually takes more processing power
(both CPU and GPU) to render a 2d environment because GPU's and Drivers are
optimized for 3D nowadays and therfore fall short when it comes to 2D
processing. So if you are running explorer.exe in non-aero you are
effectively running it in 2D therefore creating extra load. On GPU and CPU
functions, yes I know it Dosn't appear to make much sense but I find it
kinda funny that something that is so trivial can prove detrimental to
system performance, hope this helps.

True, some games have graphical glitches with it on, while others will
run awfully slow with it on too, sometimes it makes me wonder if there
is actually a rule of thumb about performance only settings. But even
though I like good performance, I won't have it if it means buggy
graphics, and I'm not also using swiftshader for a sm3/4 game to run
at 1fps. There has to be a balance for each hardware configuration.
