not all shadows are harmful to the GMAs... most dynamic shadow will surely destroy performance just like Espi and Tribaljet said, but static shadows often not to demanding, for example KF and source based games (2007)... as for dynamic lighting, most performance drops occurred because the interconnection between dynamic light and dynamic shadow maps, such as the calculations between where the shadow should be when the light in that or this position...for example that is, there are many factors that effect performance..
