Well, after microsoft and creative started a pissing contest with each
other, hardware acceleration was disabled, so creative had to make a
workaround for that since they are the leading pc soundcard
manufacturer. They created a f#uck!ng amazing software called ALchemy,
that converts DS3D calls to OpenAL, which means I play my games in all
their EAX 4.0 glory :D (for the ones that support that, that is). But
you're mixing things, EAX is an environmental engine that's used for
games, it isn't used for music or movies.
The onboard chips that go around computers nowadays are a little less
crappy, but are still very bad, and the physical plugs that
manufacturers use don't help sound quality at all, as well as a
complete lack of EMI shielding (which can be made at home just with
stuff people have in their kitchen;) ).
What kind of tweaks are you talking about, also what's outputting
sound on your pc?
