Oh, ok, I didn't get what you mean. The funny thing is that creative made EAX 1 and 2 open source, but those sound better by a little amount, adding more reverbs and echos that real positional audio, which came with EAX 3. From 3 to 5 it's still proprietary, with only one brand other than creative having access to EAX 5, and that's just because they are modding x-fi chipsets. Creative is doing a lot of sh! t these days, with very bloated software coming with their drivers, but their hardware is still the best for gaming, and quite good for pc audio. Take a look at my specs on the members page and see the soundcard I have, then check the price ;) I do recommend it to anyone who can listen the difference between crappy onboard and dedicated audio solutions ;P Btw, it's good that you have that Aiwa plugged in, as it will strengthen the audio signal a bit.
I know that Linux can have quite good sound, but xp is awful when it comes to sound, mainly because of its kmixer that really degrades audio, and that's why high-end soundcards bypass the internal mixer. Vista and 7 on the other hand have really good sound by default, and if you use WASAPI, then it's very close to perfection, given the limitation of your audio hardware. Speaking of that, what is your sound device?
