There used to be three big solutions for audio in vista/7. First there
is a famous realtek to x-fi mod, enabling some of creative's x-fi
features on realtek (realtek only!) onboard chipsets. Then you have a
rather unstable and somewhat high cpu usage alchemy app that converts
ds and ds3d to openal, for games that either don't have native openal
or even the selection between ds3d and openal. And a great solution
that was literally deleted from the web :S a universal audio driver
that was amazingly lightweight, and pushed all audio hardware to their
limits.

@lolatthteotherguy: Ever since I got my dac and my amp, the way I
listened to sound really changed. I still keep my x-fi usb around for
serious gaming, but for everything else the dac beats it to the
punch :) I don't consider myself an audiophile either, but I'm going
on that direction. Also, not using lossy formats, using bit-matched
modes or using proper calculated resamples do help. Some of these
things are controversial, it's going to do with how you think and
listen to sound.

@Espionage: Would you sacrifice some cpu cycles for full accelerated
audio on 7? And what exactly you have outputting sound on your pc?
