Ok, I'm not sure we're on the same track.

You say that "IM wasn't able to automatically set the
duplex on a link correctly. In my experience it always has to be set
manually"

I'm not aware how to make IM "set" duplex for anything.
I'm talking about putting 2 devices on a map, SNMP configured - link them up
and then
IM reports (when you click on an interface) showing either no duplex or FD.
And if IM shows that the ends don't match you usually see the bubbling and
if the traffic
is high enough, the device turns yellow/orange with the warning of tx/rx
errors or discards.

But I have to admit that maybe I'm using "old thinking". I can remember
when
studying for my Cisco stuff that many people expressed the idea that
Auto-negotiate = ought not to.......... which is to say - nail it when
possible.

And until lately that has always been possible. However, I have come up
against switches
that cannot be nailed to 1 gig, they have to auto-neg to gig.

On several of my maps IM reports (I think) 1gig Half - which isn't a
"normal" setting.
Where does IM get it's idea of duplex if not from SNMP?? Is the SNMP from
the Vendor wrong??

Interesting. As far as I knew IM wasn't able to automatically set the
duplex on a link correctly. In my experience it always has to be set
manually if it differs from the default Baseband setting in the "Set Link
Speed" dialog box you get when right clicking on a link. If this isn't
true for some kinds of devices I'd like to know which ones.

FWIW, the vast majority of duplex mismatch problems I see are when someone
sets one side of the link to full duplex while leaving the other to auto.
The auto side tries to auto-negotiate and getting no response, assumes a
dumb hub and sets itself to half. We generally avoid this by using auto
everywhere and looking closely at anything that auto-negotiates to half.
The only problems we've had with _auto_ not working are with a few older
fiber media converters.
