The number of remaining major changes planed for Ion3 becoming small,
it's time for another Ion3 wishlist inquiry. But, first, the remaining
changes on my TODO list:
* Maybe (if I come up with a design I like) some changes to drawing
engine substyle configuration and usage (substyles shared and
configured separately from "major" styles)
* Maybe (again, if I come up with a design I like) some abstract
"DrawableString" for storing strings meant for displaying on the
screen to better support e.g. possible pango-based drawing engines.
(Pango wants to decompose a string to a bloated linked list before
drawing.)
* WPaneWS fine-tuning
* Lots of other fine-tuning, clean-up and minor feature improvements.
And here's my request list for someone else to do (I won't)
* Autoconf script improvements, including at least check whether libintl
is needed and whether it is available. Possibly also checks for other
programs used by Ion (xmessage, xterm, etc.), and so on, whatever is
missing.
* Some fancy drawing engine for those crazy people who think IOn is
ugly?-)
* More scripts (http://iki.fi/tuomov/repos/ion-scripts-3/) and
requests for missing hooks etc.
Now, besides these, what features (that don't need a major rewrite) would
you want to see for Ion3? Which of these would you be willing to attempt
to write? Contributing is now easy for both you and me having switched to
using darcs for vcs.
(You can keep track of local changes without having access to a central
repository, and then send them to me when ready by email with darcs send,
while all I have to do is type '|darcs apply' in mutt after having done
an initial review of the patch. With normal diffs I'd have to look for
new files to tell the vcs about, try to think of a log message, whether
it should list the author of the patch and so on...)
As you may remember, I intent to cease active Ion development after the
release of Ion3 -- while still continuing to fix bugs and be an artistic
dict^H^Hrector, so that Ion remains true to its goals of enhancing
(keyboard) usability and going where no window manager has gone before. So
now is the time to make your requests, for after Ion3 has been released, it
certainly is up to you to implement any new features
