I've discovered this is a bit of voodoo, depending on how much you pay per 
month. My understanding is that the bulk of the 'subsidy recovery' is applied 
to the primary phone, using some sort of formula that they don't explain.

For instance, I got an iPhone 4 on launch day and I am eligible for an upgrade 
now, which I'm told is because my bill per month is relatively large (~$200/mo).
