it looks like my ipad or itunes is messed up. This doesn't happen for me. When 
I create a playlist on my iPad, then sync, the playlist disappears from my iPad 
and doesn't show up in iTunes.

Also it looks like (since I went to try it again after your description above) 
my "purchased" list on my iPad is being nuked. After a sync there's nothing 
left in "purchased" - the songs are still on the iPad and on my Mac in iTunes, 
but not listed as "purchased"

Looks like it's time for the dreaded call to Apple Support (and the usual 
argument about whether I should spend the day resetting my iPad and 
reinstalling all my apps and their associated settings.....)
