Isn't this the moral equivalent of having a semi-transparent picture
of a mouse with the left button highlighted to indicate "click here"
or putting a keyboard in the background of a text input field to
indicate "type here"?

As lame and unnecessary as it is, two-finger scrolling is a normal way
of interacting with the iPhone and apparently Safari on a Mac laptop
with a touch pad. Cluttering up an iPhone app with indications of how
to do normal things seems like something that would become
anachronistic about two days after you started doing it.
