Ira, I work at NASA/Johnson Space Center. Back when I was in the Mission Ops Directorate (MOD), the NASA Branch Chiefs had a direct feed of the prime Space-to-Ground link (SG1, I think) from the Mission Control Center (MCC) to their offices. That way they could listen to real-time audio during Shuttle missions.
If I recall correctly, it was a coax cable from a wall plate to a grey box on the cabinet behind their desk. The box had a volume control knob on the side. The speakers looked like they had been around from the Apollo, maybe even Gemini days. Maybe the families of the Apollo 13 astronauts were given similar audio access over twisted pair cable via the phone lines to their homes in Nassau Bay, which is right across the road (NASA Road1) from NASA/JSC?? 73, Steve Ponder, N5WBI ---------------------- Sent from my iPhone On Nov 3, 2012, at 8:22 PM, Ira Elbert New III <[email protected]> wrote: > > Here's a question for those of you who are a lot smarter than I am...I'm > watching Apollo 13 during the commercial breaks tonight while the ALA - LSU > game is on.
