       Oops. My bad. I thought the `if` statement was (!use_sdf_read && 
(use_deprecated_read || beam_fn_api_use_deprecated_read)) - which actually 
would make more sense to me, because that is consistent with the fact, that we 
made SDF the default. This way I think the `beam_fn_api_use_deprecated_read` 
will not work, but I actually don't know where it is set. Will move the call to 
the inner block.
