Option 4 would get us the '.' back (that would mean that we'd do options 3 and
4).
Migrating, we will have a pre-update step where you run a script and it will
check your install for v1 hfiles AND if you have tables with dots in them. If
you have dots in your table name, you will be pointed at a page that describes
the options available to you.
